New Stonefly Pattern...The Vinyl Rib Stone

I was sitting at the tying bench the other day and came up with a new stone pattern...I tried to construct the bug with as much realism as possible...

Hook: any curved shanked hook.

Thread: 6/0 brown (or olive)

Tail: Brown goose biot

Body: Brown vinyl rib (I use a layer of brown dubbing under the vinyl rib to build up the body)

Thorax: Gray ostrich herl

Legs: Brown goose biot (bent to shape)

I add lead and a gold beadhead to aid in siking the fly to the bottom of the river. Stoneflies are found on the bottom, so keeping this fly down deep is a must.

That is one amazing pattern! I went to SMSP yesterday, and despite the rain did very well. I think that the brookies and browns have started there spawning fast. I only caught one little brookie and everything else (about 8) where bows. They are VERY PICKY mock hitting a lot. I think I have one trick figured out though. May go back up Tuesday or Friday.

Those DH fish are starting to get pretty picky now that they have had a few weeks to see a variety of flies. Glad you were able to catch some fish up there despite they're extra "pickiness". I'm sure the fall foliage made the trip even better.

I'm heading out of town on Monday to do a little fishing, so may try Stone Mtn as well (thiking about trying some new water though)...

I always run for the fly swatter when I see it!!
